ATHLETIC POLICY
Up and Coming Changes:(beginning with next Soccer Season 2009) To stay in compliance with the Upper Valley Recreation Association, The Weathersfield Athletic Committee will be changing the following athletic policy starting in the fall: Parents must first register their children for sports programs at Weathersfield School or Weathersfield Recreation Department. If enrollment does not warrant a team, only pre-registered students will be eligible to play in another town.
It is the philosophy of the Weathersfield School Board that the athletic program is an extension of the school’s regular curriculum and educational objectives. The Athletic Program has the following purposes:
- To enhance the fundamental skills of the students for future athletic participation.
- To develop sportsmanship, perseverance, cooperation, and self-discipline as core qualities of the program.
- To enhance self-esteem through the physical, social, and emotional development of the student.
- To introduce students to health and physical benefits of playing sports.
- To have fun.
The emphasis of the program will be on participation, teaching, progression of skills, and having fun with minimal competitive pressures.
In addition, the School Board requests the establishment of an athletic committee to advise the school board and assist in future planning surrounding this policy. The Athletic Committee will be a group of no more than (8) members. Membership is to include the following: The 5-8 Athletic Director, 3 Staff members, 3 Community members, 1 School Board member. The committee will assist in selection for coaches, policy revisions, review of coaches, and establishing minimum athletic skills to be practiced with each team level. The Committee will meet at least three times yearly. Meetings will take place at the end of each sports season. Special meetings will be held upon request of the Athletic Director or committee members. The Athletic Committee will be reselected during the month of June each year. Minutes of the meetings will be distributed to members of the committee and school board within two weeks.
Therefore, the Weathersfield School Board requests the Superintendent of Schools to put into effect administrative procedures that will carry out this policy and assure the quality of these programs.
